The United Nations General Assembly has voted to adopt a new equal-area world map projection designed to display the true geographic scale of continents, addressing centuries of cartographic distortion that shrinks Africa. However, because the UN resolution is non-binding, tech giants, textbook publishers, and national education ministries are under no legal obligation to update their software or printed materials.
For decades, digital platforms and educational systems have relied on the 16th-century Mercator projection.
While Mercator accurately preserves local shapes and angles, making it useful for marine navigation and modern web mapping, it severely inflates the visual size of landmasses near the poles while shrinking tropical regions around the equator.
